Across the villages and trading centres of Terego District in Uganda’s West Nile Region, thousands of women wake each morning with ambition, determination, and innovative business ideas. Yet for many, opportunity has remained just beyond reach, restricted by limited access to capital, business networks, professional guidance, and market opportunities. In June 2026, NUWEBIZ Foundation set out to change that story.
As an implementing partner of the Generating Growth Opportunities and Productivity for Women Enterprises (GROW) Project, funded by the World Bank through the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, the Foundation convened district leaders, development stakeholders, and women entrepreneurs around a common purpose: creating an environment where women-owned enterprises can flourish.
The engagement marked a turning point for the district with the successful establishment of the Women Entrepreneurs Platform (WEP) and the election of its leadership. More than an elected body, the platform is a long-term investment in women’s leadership, enterprise development, and collective action β a structured space where women can exchange knowledge, build strategic partnerships, access business support services, strengthen financial literacy, connect to markets, and advocate for policies that unlock economic opportunities.
For many participants, this was the first time they had been recognised not simply as market vendors or small business owners, but as entrepreneurs capable of driving local economic development β an affirmation that their businesses matter, their ideas have value, and their voices deserve to influence the future of their communities.
A thriving woman-owned business generates income that is often reinvested into children’s education, family nutrition, healthcare, and community wellbeing. As businesses expand, they create employment, stimulate local trade, strengthen agricultural and commercial value chains, and contribute to more resilient local economies β this is the ripple effect that NUWEBIZ Foundation is helping to create, one entrepreneur, one business, and one community at a time.
When women entrepreneurs succeed, families become stronger, local economies become more vibrant, and entire communities move closer to sustainable prosperity.
